I am prescribed 10 mg of methadone in the morning and 20mg of methadone in the evening by my pain management doctor for a condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (it used to be called Reflex Sympathic Dystrophy and it was caused Causalgia many years ago). I also take oxycodone 5mg once daily for breakthrough pain.  I am a medical professional that has been working since I was diagnosed about 7 years ago. The methadone makes the pain manageable enough that I would like to return to work part time. I don’t have any negative effects from the methadone and it would not interfere with my judgement or ability to care for patients. There is a HUGE stigma regarding methadone.. most people immediately associate it with heroin addiction. I have never done illicit drugs in my life and I was never on pain medication until I developed CRPS.  Because I am a medical professional, it is guaranteed I will be given a pre-employment tox screen.  Some places only test for illicit drugs, however, because of the “opioid crisis” many employers test for opiates, methadone, benzo’s etc.  I would love to be open with employers and let them know that I have this extremely painful chronic neurological disorder and that I have to take medication in order to function in life but I am afraid I will be told “sorry but we can’t hire you while you’re taking narcotics”.  So part of me wants to just not say a word and pray that the tox screen doesn’t include methadone and pray for the best. I feel like the once daily prn oxycodone would be easier to explain without being looked at as a “drug addict”. I have even thought about stopping the methadone until I pass the tox screen and then restarting. How long will methadone stay in my urine if I do stop. I have been taking it for about 4 years.
